About the academy...

Academy 1

A career in dog grooming can often be seen as a fairy-tale job.

And although most groomers adore their jobs overall, it must be said that life as a groomer can be entirely exhausting and takes a certain type of person to embrace the career as a whole – one who is passionate to aid canine welfare and be open to develop their profession with a sense of humour and embrace the difficult days as well as the good.

Dog grooming is a physically demanding role, where you will be a hot, hairy, smelly mess most of the time and find yourself tenderly conversing with canines for the majority of your working day (... like that's even an issue, I did that before becoming a groomer!).

At times, dog grooming can be emotionally challenging. For their grooms, most well-adjusted doggies are saints, others require YOU to have the patience of a saint!

But all that said, the rewards and fuzzy feeling in your heart will override the negative and you will be proud to be a dog groomer.

Most students have a similar ambition post qualification - to enjoy a career they have a passion for.

Whatever your ambition, GoldWalk Grooming & Training Academy LTD can help you get there.

Our courses are tailored to each students individual needs, we have a wide range to choose from.

We run courses in small private groups to ensure our students receive full attention from their tutor. Overcrowded courses mean a tutor is overstretched and the student does not gain the intense expert tuition they are paying for to enable them the best chance of success.

We have state of the art facilities and equipment, including Hydrobaths, a generous sized salon with a separate classroom area, kitchen access, a staff room to rest within on your breaks and a sperate bathing area.

We have ample parking and excellent local amenities on the parade of shops we are based on. Including a shop and food establishments.

Learn the trade within an established, successful salon with actual hands-on experience, with real customers. A lot of courses are primarily based just in the classroom and don't allow students to build skills and confidence in handling customer expectations and consultations. We will equip you with the necessary tools to give you the confidence to succeed.

We are a small, friendly and extremely supportive team of staff here at GoldWalk, we are a family. And our students will never feel judged, embarrassed or under supported. We embrace our students and envelope them with a sense of "can do". We were all students ourselves once upon a time!

FAQs

How do I know grooming is for me?

Dog grooming is a fantastic, rewarding and challenging job, it can make you cry tears of joy and tears of sorrow. A good dog groomer is non-judgemental, empathetic, good communicators and possess a self-critical mind with a desire to help animals through the provision of top standards of animal welfare by means of grooming services. Groomers are creative and enjoy challenges where they can apply themselves. Still not sure? Why not come to one of our taster day courses?

Can I make a good living from been a dog groomer?

Yes! You run your own race and by dedicating yourself to been the best you can you will most certainly be able to make a living from this career.

Is dog grooming difficult?

Honest answer – yes, It can be. It is a physically and sometimes emotionally demanding role requiring lots of patience, empathy, a good understanding of canine behaviour and a decent level of fitness. It is hot, hairy, sometimes smelly and exhausting. But, I still wake up every morning (19 years later) and look forward to my day ahead. The bonds you build with your dogs and their owners are unbeatable.

What is your top tip for me as a dog groomer?

Look after your body, even as a young spring chicken I would urge you to see a chiropractor regularly and invest in the best possible equipment you can – prevention is better than cure. Height adjustable grooming tables, face masks, beekeeper hats – they will all help look after your body and serve a purpose.

Any other tips?

Many, but one of the main ones is charge your worth, don’t be tempted to set cheap prices. All you are doing is under valuing your work, skills and setting a precedence that grooming isn’t a high skilled trade requiring payment as such! You spend thousands of pounds learning this art, countless hours developing it to high standards, invest yourself in providing an excellent service – not everyone can be a fantastic groomer – so value yourself!

Do you have parking?

Yes! We have a large car park outside the salon, and we also have lots of parking on the local adjoining streets.

Can you help me start my own business?

Absolutely. We will give you as much advice as we possibly can on your course and answer any questions you may have. We work closely with a range of other professions that can assist you on your grooming journey.

What wont the course provide me with?

Speed and finesse. This is something that will take time, as your confidence and abilities grow, your time will naturally reduce. Don’t rush, this is when mistakes are likely to happen. We will show you ways to reduce times on your course but don’t expect miracles. Grooming is an art and it takes patience and development.

Why do you limit classes to 2 people?

We like to provide our students with private tuition to learn their trade, overcrowded classes mean that you receive less feedback, less guidance and less education overall. We pride ourselves on producing amazing groomers who have the correct skills and experience to enable them the best chance of success in the dog grooming industry. We don’t max out our classes to increase our profit margins, we care about our students and their learning needs and believe that they deserve the best possible introduction to this wonderful career.
